Artist Spotlight | Alejandro Reyes-Andreu

Do you have any upcoming events or projects that you would like to share?

The Torontonians art project (recipient of RBC Art Access Fund) is about honouring construction, industrial, and city workers with the production of life-sized portraits on canvas. This is a continuation of previous work I did in my hometown in Cuba.

At Power Plant, on February 28th at 2pm, I will lead a discussion about Leslie Hewitt's exhibition Collective Stance.

What is your creative process like?

My creative process is diverse and has stages. The motive comes from many places - from experiencing other artists’ works to assisting a music concert or a theatrical play. The thirst for knowledge drives me through a field of ideas. Pursuing an objective or goal is what usually sparks exciting ideas and drives me to produce my pieces. Once I establish a reachable goal and settle the conditions, music and dance often accompany me during the factual creative process. If it isn't the right moment for an idea or a project, I'll archive it until proper conditions arise.

How has your style changed over the years?

My style or aesthetics, as well as my themes, haven't changed too much.

What is your twitter handle? How about Instagram?

I recently got twitter and Instagram. I feel like I’m crawling, because I’ve lived almost all my life in Cuba, where we’re internet illiterate.

I am aware of the power of social media, and although it takes time from my day, I spend time on it.
