Children's Peace Theatre
About:
Children's Peace Theatre is an award-winning community arts organization, serving the children and youth of Toronto. Our work is based on the belief that conflict is inevitable, but peace is possible when people face conflict with courage, compassion and creativity.
CPT offers a wide range of peace-building programming for children and youth, including in-school-time workshops, after-school programs, weekend activities and a three-week summer camp.
Children's Peace Theatre does not teach a code, an ethic or a doctrine of peace. Instead, we create an environment in which children and youth work collaboratively with highly qualified theatre professionals to define and establish an understanding of peace for themselves.
Through this process, young people are given powerful opportunities to address the reality of conflict in their lives and in our world. They theatrically recount and bear witness to their own stories, as well as stories from their communities and beyond. They become leaders and agents of peace.
Children's Peace Theatre’s home is the historic Massey-Goulding Estate, owned by the City of Toronto, in the beautiful, natural ravine setting of Taylor-Massey Creek Park in east-end Toronto.
Thoughts about art and community:
Art has the power to transform individuals, communities and the World.
Children's Peace Theatre has developed an arts-based approach that really works for the children and youth who are our future leaders. Programs and productions are collaborations between the finest professional artists and young people, resulting in compelling art, which arises directly from their concerns and fears.
The collaborative experience of creating theatre and other forms of art, on subjects of importance to them gives children and youth the understanding to develop their own moral compass and further the cause of peace in their lives, in our City and in the World.
