Dale Hamilton Everybodys Theatre Company

About:

Everybody’s Theatre Company was founded in 1989 by Artistic Director Dale Hamilton, arising out of the Eramosa Community Play Project, often described as the first all-inclusive, community-engaged theatrical production in Canada, which in turn acted as a major catalyst in the community arts movement. Originally, ETC based its work on the philosophy and practice of England’s Colway Theatre Trust (now operating as Claque Theatre), following an apprenticeship by Dale Hamilton in the late 1980’s. But over the years, ETC has developed its own unique approach to community-engaged theatre, including the concept and practice of active promenade (theatrical walks), echo casting, community soundings and community comoras. ETC has been pursuing its passion for community-engaged theatre for almost two decades, averaging a major project every 2-3 years. Since 2005, ETC has also collaborated with Lateral Strategies, an international consulting company based in New York City, to offer creative community development workshops and trainings in Canada, the U.S, the Netherlands and Africa, with upcoming workshops in South East Asia.

Thoughts about art and community:

Having worked (slaved?) in community engaged arts for over 2 decades, it is extremely gratifying to see the depth and breadth of the movement in Toronto. We have come of age (and will always be kids at play)!
