Intermission
About:
Intermission is a non-profit organization that joins theatres with communities in need. We subsidize theatre tickets so that youth-in-need may access them for free.
The youth who participate in our program attend 6 performances in our 13-week term. We see a performance every other week, and on the off weeks we hold discussion groups, and provide a small dinner. TTC tokens are provided.
Youth in our program have an opportunity to be inspired by new creative works, to be welcomed into Toronto's theatre community, and to be educated about theatre. Discussion groups teach participants communication skills, how to be creative in argumentation, how to express themselves and critical thinking. They have a creative and intellectual outlet for their energies and talents, and are able to connect with culture.
Thoughts about art and community:
Art and community are necessary for each other. Community breeds art, and art facilitates community culture.
To attend a theatrical performance is to be a part of a culture - to breathe together; to laugh and think as one. Welcoming all people into this community is the most important way that Toronto can grow as a whole, as well as strengthen the theatrical arts of tomorrow.
