Les Luxemburger
About:
I am a visual artist dedicated to environmental conservation and protection. I work full-time in environmental policy, trying to influence municipal and provincial policies in a creative way, to protect wetlands and migratory bird habitat in Southern Ontario.
My formal art education consists of:
- Sheridan College, Art Fundamentals;
- Maxx the Mutt animation studios;
- Mississauga Valley School of Arts;
- Newmarket School of Fine Art.
I am an art educator at the Newmarket School of Fine Art, and am now exploring innovative ways to communicate solutions and issues about environmental conservation, sustainable development and community sustainability planning, species at risk protection, climate change, etc. I am experimenting with mixed-media and photography, although I specialize in acrylic and oil painting; my subject matter includes:
- nature and urban scences;
- portraits;
- animals, plants (flora and fauna);
- abstract art;
- mixed media; and
- installation art.

Thoughts about art and community:
Community art practice in Toronto and the GTA and the whole Greater Golden Horseshoe needs to consist of community art practice, action learning/participatory forms of art that engage and challenge convention; as well as story-telling and healing modalities (kung-fu, Qi-Gong, etc). I would like to see greater opportunities for artists who want to get involved in environmental conservation and protection projects, and using artwork to influence environmental policies and conservation programs, including protection of Species at Risk of extinction. I would like to see more fund raising efforts and projects for artists who are raising money for environmental sustainability and conservation projects, initiatives and programs.
