About:
I'm a dancer, bgirl, actor, arts administrator and arts advocate. I believe in the power of art to build healthier, stronger individuals and communities. I love cultural diversity and culturally diverse dance forms, and my own area of expertise is in urban, street or hiphop culture. I run a yearly urban arts festival in Ottawa called the House of PainT and here in Toronto I am affiliated with the Sony Centre's upcoming Breakin Convention (June 2011) and the ongoing work of BeautifulCity.ca to see more funds put towards public arts in our city.
I am currently working for the City of Toronto with the Arts Services section of Economic Development and Culture. I'm a Cultural Outreach Officer there, which means I work with artists and community members to promote community arts and arts in underserved communities. I recently finished a Masters in Health Promotion and Community Development, looking at how art can build healthier, stronger individuals and communities, so this is right up my alley.
Thoughts about art and community:
Art is powerful tool for building and growing communities! Involvement in arts, as an art maker, an art patron, or simply a passerby, has the ability to engage and bring people together, overcoming barriers of language, culture, geographical distance and social norms to create more connected, resilient and resourceful individuals and communities.
