Toronto Pig Save
About:
Toronto Pig Save aims to promote animal rights and veganism by highlighting the plight of pigs and other farms animals heading to Toronto's slaughterhouses, following Paul McCartney's famous dictum: "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian." One way to achieve our goal is by assembling multimedia art ranging from Sue Coe's powerful sketches and paintings of pigs in transport trucks and slaughterhouses to German multimedia artist Dirk Giesselman's riveting animal rights posters and Caitlin Black's poignant new graphic novel "Mary of Mud Creek" about a young girl who rescues sows from an industrial farm. We have vegan humour (Lara Matthews' Lola Lollipop, Niagara Falls humourist John Sakars, and Toronto's animationist Iven Simonetti) and journalistic photos (Susan Morris of Snooters Farm Animal Sanctuary, Jo-Anne McArthur of We Animals, and Sherry Burnett of Ruby Ranch Pig Sanctuary), videos (Twyla Francois and Anita Krajnc's rabbletv videos) and writers (philosopher Dave Sztybel). We plan to organize a travelling art show, beginning with a "Art to Help Save Pigs" show at Brock University's "Thinking About Animals Conference 2011."
Through the juxtaposition of images of slaughter with images of rescue and sanctuary, we hope to show what is possible and ethical in our treatment of farm animals. The group will also be assembling Toronto vigils and further multimedia exhibits, as well as launching a Canadian initiative of “The Vegan Challenge" in the workplace during Earth Week (April 17-23), based on Oprah's Vegan Challenge.
The group was founded in December 2010 by Anita Krajnc and has since grown to a large grassroots organization with dozens of volunteers from all walks of life. Toronto Pig Save welcomes and invites contributions from artists, journalists, activists, and scholars concerned about the plight of farm animals and their rescue as more and more people adopt a vegan way of life and support a growing network of local farm sanctuaries in Ontario and beyond.
