Confessions Underground
Pattison Onestop, Art for Commuters (A4C) and Labspace Studio present the bold video art installation, Confessions Underground. Part social experiment and part public intervention, the project was developed by Toronto artists John Loerchner & Laura Mendes, Co-Directors of Labspace Studio. Confessions Underground will play on the network of Pattison Onestop's TTC subway platform screens throughout Toronto from July 2 to July 15, 2012.
"I love my cat more than my boyfriend..."
"When I was sixteen I gave up my child for adoption..."
"I secretly want to be famous, powerful, rich, even though..."
"I still have a secret obsession with my ex and I'm engaged..."
Revealing, funny, candid and heartfelt confessions are set to capture the attention of more than one million daily TTC subway commuters. An impressive collection of 30 second solicited and subtitled on-camera confessions by brave strangers from Toronto and abroad have been assembled and will appear every 10 minutes on TTC platform screens, in 63 stations on more than 300 screens across the city. (Participant names and contact information will not be disclosed at any time.)
"What makes Confessions Underground so intriguing is that we all harbour secrets, and as we discovered, a lot of people really want the chance to confess that one secret." comments John Loerchner, Co-Director of Labspace Studio. "It's an exhilarating, frightening and potentially risky opportunity."
Confessions were gathered from online submissions and a portable confession booth which was built by Loerchner and Mendes, and travelled with the artists to street corners and public parks in Toronto as well as Montreal, Buffalo, Toledo, Detroit, and Chicago.
Loerchner and Mendes will continue to solicit confessions on the streets of Toronto with their portable confession booth. Online confessions will be accepted until July 1, 2012.
