SALARY: $47,000

Organization & Program Description

For Youth Initiative (FYI) is a non-profit, charitable organization operated by youth, for youth. FYI aims to encourage civic engagement and increase access to educational, recreational, economical and cultural opportunities for marginalized and at risk youth. Civic engagement, critical analysis, leadership, youth empowerment, skill building and community building are encouraged and incorporated in all community development work at FYI.

The community engagement stream is the face of the organization and it ensures that FYI has a strong multi-faceted presence within the communities we serve. The stream’s approach towards community engagement includes interacting with the:

§ The Social Community – potential FYI members;

§ The Donor Community – individual and corporate donors;

§ The Service Provider Community – youth services organizations, community organizations, councils and networks; and

§ The Volunteer Community – placement students, community service orders, and mentors for youth.

Position Summary

The Director of Community Engagement and Communication leads the community engagement stream of FYI. The position is responsible for leading the overall outreach function for FYI by designing the strategic outreach plan of the entire organization. The position supports the writing of grant proposals and reports related to organizational sustainability and growth. With the support of the Executive Director, this position creates fundraising goals for the fiscal year and, along with the fundraising committee, develops strategizes on how to reach these goals. The position identifies and engages with critical city-wide councils and networks, other youth led groups and organizations, and initiatives that are committed to similar values as FYI’s. This position supervises up to three staff and oversees the internal and external communications at FYI.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities:

§ Oversees the branding (flyers, brochures, PSA’s, media releases) of the organization

§ Develops strategies for identifying and outreaching to service user groups and oversees the implementation and evaluation of the strategies

§ Develops strategies for increasing the agency’s membership base and increasing member participation in agency initiatives

§ Manages the development of tools, protocols and policies for social community engagement

§ Identifies and networks with individuals, organizations, and institutions to increase visibility in the community

§ Develops strategies for identifying and outreaching to potential corporations, foundations, trusts and individual donors and manages the implementation and evaluation of the strategies

§ Networks with potential individual donors to solicit donations

§ Identifies key service providers in target communities and engages them through partnerships focused on shared services

§ Identifies small and developing youth service providers, associations and networks and engages them in capacity building initiatives

§ Identifies and ensures FYI’s representation and participation in city wide councils, networks and umbrella organizations

§ Oversees the implementation of FYI’s new volunteer management structure

§ Works closely with staff in ensuring that volunteers are provided with meaningful and engaging opportunities while at FYI

§ Responsible for the recruitment, supervision and evaluation of 3 staff positions

§ Monitors department/program budget for accuracy and completeness and is responsible for planning expenditures and budgets

§ Manages petty cash

§ Inputs data into appropriate forms and reports

§ Manages staff timesheets and other related documentation

Required Qualifications:

§ The minimum level of education preferred is a community college diploma in Human services and social studies related education (social work, social services work, community work, international development, corporate social responsibility, etc)

§ Minimum of three years experience managing a non-profit community based program, and experience working within a priority/ underserved neighbourhood

§ Experience in outreach planning and implementation

§ Experience managing multiple projects and supervising people

§ Experience running successful fundraising initiatives/campaigns

§ Experience working with volunteers

§ Familiarity with networking and partnership building

§ Experience working with Income Manager software would be an asset

§ Has an understanding of the youth led social service sector and of the challenges facing youth from ethnically diverse communities

Able to work with minimal supervision

Good organizational and time-management skills and able to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Ability to adhere to and enforce the guidelines, policies and values of FYI
