Invitation to Maíz: A story of (up)rooted resistances

April 25, 2012

Using dance, poetry, and physical theatre this piece tells a story of the relationship between Maíz, (corn) and humans over time.   Maíz, indigenous to the Americas, has been traditionally revered as a sacred plant by peoples the world over.  Commodified by colonialism and agribusiness, corn has become one of the most genetically modified crops in the world today.   Drawing connections between the de-naturalization of maíz, humans and nature, this piece seeks to echo the feminine, natural, human spirit that is rising once again in reclamation of a more balanced and just way of interbeing.

This event is part of the weekend-long Toronto Spring Convergence, bringing together various community groups, performers and permaculturalists throughout the city. You can find details about the weekend here on Facebook.
