SKETCH Art and Garden Facilitator
SKETCH is a community arts initiative in Toronto that engages youth living
street-involved and homeless in personal and social change. SKETCH conducts a progressive learning framework through art-making in a multi-discipline studio environment and in the community. Currently based in downtown Toronto, SKETCH has been developing its concept of community development and youth engagement through arts and culture since 1996. SKETCH creates environments for youth to express themselves, learn and exchange skills, participate and become leaders in the broader community.
We are currently seeking an Art and Garden Facilitator to work in our Community Garden. The AGF is involved with all aspects of garden programming at SKETCH, including garden maintenance, arts based ideas and projects as relates to the garden project, menu planning, meal preparation, set-up before program, and indoor garden maintenance here at the studio. The AGF is also involved in connecting the Sketch community with garden programming, through engaging other youth in coming to the gardens; and getting feedback on activities
within the project.
This is a Part-Time Contract position at SKETCH. It is for $18 per hour, 18 hours per week, for 23 weeks. The contract will begin at the end of April, 2010, and will end at approximately the end of September, 2010.
Key Responsibilities
• Collaboration with youth and Sketch leadership team members to develop
plans for Art in the Gardens, planting and garden maintenance
• Assisting with advertising schedule and workshop activities
• Making meals in the Community Kitchen, and sharing meal planning
• Collecting community desires and interests-helping coordinator to best
meet these requests by assisting with scheduling of activities and sharing
information about community resources and events
• Supporting workshop leaders in projects and workshops on and off-site
• Encouraging participation from the SKETCH community
• Ensuring general care of garden plots and any indoor gardening elements
at Sketch
• Creating artwork within the project for the purpose of inspiring others and
for furthering their own arts practice
• Evaluating at the end of each activity and at the end of the project with
time to create recommendations for next season as well as collect
resources for the Sketch community
Qualifications
- Experience with arts-based workshop facilitation;
- Experience in community gardens, garden planning and plant care;
- Experience with bringing seasonal foods into the kitchen, and a comfort
level with cooking for large groups;
- Experience with youth at risk, and/or knowledge of the street-involved and
homeless community in Toronto;
- A strong anti-oppression framework; and a
- Demonstrated commitment to and awareness of community-based arts
initiatives.
