(Toronto) Friday, November 30, 2012, The Neighbourhood Arts Network & Scarborough Arts launches ‘Making A Living. Making Art.’ a new speakers and creative networking series focused on celebrating the ways in which Toronto’s vibrant arts communities make a living, making art. This in-depth peer-to-peer learning experience will highlight local Toronto artists and neighbourhoods coming together to discuss specific themes geared towards promoting healthy and sustainable careers in the arts. Topics will range from: ‘How to Maintain a Positive Work-Art-Life Balance,’  ‘The Art of Sponsorship’, ‘Creative Self Promotion,’ ‘Arts & Equity’  and  ‘Effective Grant Writing Techniques,’ all shared through the insights, stories, tools and techniques presented by thriving local artists and community experts.

The inaugural ‘Making A Living. Making Art’ event will feature Scarborough artists from the performing arts sector and take place in the Doris McCarthy Gallery at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Featured speakers will share stories on how they thrive in their work and will include 20 minutes talks by :

  • Archie Alleyne - Award winning Musician/Entrepreneur/Mentor/Activist
  • Kevin Orsmby  - Choreographer/Kashe Dance Artistic director/Consultant
  • Judith Manger – Founding Director of Axis Music & Cellist

To ensure ‘audience participation’ and community dialogue, each event will begin with a dynamic creative networking component facilitated by the Neighbourhood Arts Network. Participants will be invited to share their own stories and to vocalize key issues pertinent to their professional development. Their feedback  will help direct the themes and featured speakers for future events.

Making a Living. Making Art. is a unique collaboration of organizations and artists dedicated to creating enriched experiences for artists and arts organizations to help support the work that they do best. By supporting the people who enrich Toronto through art and community engaged work we in turn promote the  transformation of Toronto it into a more vibrant, beautiful and liveable city.
