WHAT IS THE FRINGE FESTIVAL
Founded in 1989, The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival is part of the global phenomena that has been bringing artists and audiences together in astonishing numbers for decades. Last year’s attendance topped 60,000 to 1200 performances by 150 companies at 30 venues across Toronto, and we’re anticipating bigger crowds for 2010. This two week celebration of Toronto resulted in over $427,000 returned to our participating companies, bringing our more than 20 year investment in our community to well above $4,000,000!
The core concept at the Fringe is accessibility, both to our artists and audiences, and for two weeks in July all of Toronto takes a moment to join the anarchy of the festival. In November of 2009 The Toronto Fringe Festival, Mirvish Enterprises, and The Randolph Centre for the Arts announced a new partnership that sees the Fringe festival reconfigured around the major performance and social hub at Bathurst & Bloor. 10x10x10 gives students points of access into such creative outlets as theatre, dance and volunteer opportunities during the summer festival. To make sure that you, the artist, can take the risks you need to take and tell the stories you need to tell, all Fringe shows are selected by lottery: we’ll provide the infrastructure, you provide the art. The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival is a member of the Canadian Association of Fringe ® Festivals (CAFF) and, as such, operates under the four guiding principles of CAFF.
