Opportunity: Jane's Walk Seeks Community Walks
From the site: http://www.janeswalk.net/
Jane’s Walk is the street-level celebration of Jane Jacobs’ legacy that combines the simple act of walking with personal observations, urban history and local lore as a means of knitting people together into strong and resourceful communities. All tours are given, and taken, for free. Over 10,000 people explored over 315 neighbourhoods across Canada and the United States last year – and we’re going global with tours in
Europe, South America and Asia!
We are looking for groups, large or small, young or old, newcomers or established communities, to lead a tour in an area where you live, work or play. In the past, the Community Walks program has created some of our most successful and popular tours - a great mix of learning, creativity, fun and interactivity. Past tours have included historical skits, puppet shows, poetry readings and in-person interviews with firemen, business owners and politicians – your group decides what’s important. We can provide staff and resources for this project – for free – you just provide the prospective tour guides and neighbourhood.
Our facilitators offer some pointers on tour logistics, how to organize the route, the starting and ending point, the distance covered, and so on. We’re depending on you to activate local networks and bring some folks to the ‘walking conversation’ but we make that easier by providing blank posters and suggestions for pitching the story to local media. We provide the bulk of the promotion through our website, local and national media, paid advertising and so on.
Jane’s Walk animators and volunteers can help make all this happen, but they are not essential to the process. This Community Walks curriculum is intended only as a helpful resource for prospective tour guides, if you want to dive in and do it yourself, wonderful. Help yourself to our on-line resources at www.janeswalk.net and send us a tour description!
By creating a Jane’s Walk, you are making a community resource that you can continue to use over and over, whenever you like – at street festivals, community orientations, with supporters and stakeholders. We hope you’ll join us in offering an insider’s take on your city’s vibrant and fascinating neighbourhoods. Please get in touch us at director@janeswalk.net and we’ll connect you with resources to help you plan
your walk.
