OUTREACH 2012 - REFLECTION

Gallery 44 is pleased to offer OUTREACH, our award-winning education program designed specifically for youth with limited access to photography, as a medium of creative self-expression. OUTREACH breaks down barriers to the arts and encourages under-served youth to develop their creative voice and understand the power of the photographic image. Through OUTREACH, Gallery 44 works in collaboration with five community organizations to offer black and white photography workshops to over 50 young people in the G.T.A. The workshops have a new thematic focus each year, guiding youth from concept to production, and an exhibition at Gallery 44.
Gallery 44 created the David Barker Maltby Award to honour the memory of long-time Gallery 44 member, teacher and photographer, David Barker Maltby. In keeping with David's commitment to education, community activism and documentary photography, two awards are given each year to promising young artists from OUTREACH.
In addition, each year, representative youth from each community organization collaborate and create a zine responding to the annual theme. This year, we have readapted this idea to create an electronic version of the zine. During the opening, we will launch the OUTREACH E-ZINE – REFLECTION.
