Riverdale Hub: The Gerrard Art
GerrardART: Revitalizing Gerrard Bazaar Through the Transformative Power of Art
This September, Riverdale Hub will be officially launching the GerrardART Community Revitalization Project. We invite one and all to join us on a journey of cultural discovery, community revitalization, and celebration through mural street art!
Made possible by a generous StreetARToronto grant from the city, Riverdale Hub’s GerrardART project will consist of a compelling mural on a major wall starting at 1322 Gerrard Street East, the vibrant re-painting of all storefront façades on the block, that will wrap around and end with a dramatic mural on the eastern façade of 1330 Gerrard St. By aiming to counter vandalism, increase traffic to the area and promote local economic development, this ambitious undertaking will be a catalyst for change and revitalization in the entire Gerrard Bazaar area.
The GerrardART project is a perfect example of the Riverdale Hub’s vision: talented, innovative people gathering on an equal footing across gender, class and generational dividing lines in an open and sustainable space in order to create something amazing and transformative.
Together we can begin to create a revitalized neighbourhood empowered by the community.
About the Riverdale Hub
Founded by a grassroots women’s organization, the Hub’s historic century-old building has been reimagined as an environmentally sustainable space that promotes community economic development through social enterprises, transformative art and community-based revitalization projects.
StreetARToronto or StART (formally known as the Graffiti Transformation Program) is a new, pro-active program administered by the City of Toronto that aims to develop, support, promote and increase awareness of street art and its indispensable role in adding beauty and character to neighbourhoods across Toronto, while counteracting graffiti vandalism and its harmful effect on communities.
