Sew What?! program launch

July 11, 2012

Art Starts is very excited to invite you to the launch of our brand-new, hands-on intensive fashion program Sew What?! on Tuesday July 17th from 11am-12pm at our Yorkdale Community Arts Centre studio. This will be your opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet the talented, fashion-inspired youth participants as they enter the 2nd week of their 7-week program.

Generously funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Sew What?! targets youth for whom significant barriers to participation in the arts are a consistent reality. This hands-on program will act as a non-traditional catalyst helping to cultivate skills required to pursue a fashion-focused career all the while exploring cultural histories, class, gender, personal expression, career development and industry. The participating youth will develop a sense of where their skills might best be utilized in the fashion world: clothing design, illustration, construction, merchandising, textile design and show production. They will develop city-wide networks, portfolio pieces and relationships with retailers. The program will culminate in a fashion show in September and a display of their final pieces in a retail setting.

We are excited to be bringing back an old Art Starts friend, Starr Jacobs, as the Program Manager of Sew What?! Starr brings with her along and accomplished history of working in the fashion, film and TV industries.

We hope that you can join us for what will be an inspiring window into the heart of an Art Starts program! Please RSVP to simone@artstarts.net.
