ARTiculate Youth Leadership in the Arts

by Lakeshore Arts

About:

ARTiculate is a Youth Leadership in the Arts Program at Lakeshore Arts. This stellar two-week summer program for youth (ages 13-17) features workshops with professional artists, field trips to arts destinations, leadership training, a two-day volunteer placement and a final exhibition and event.

In 2010, ARTiculate participants worked with professional artists in DJing, Juggling, Dramatic Writing, Digital Photography, Glass Sculpture, Encaustic Painting, Urban Art Interventions and Latin Dance. Participants had the opportunity to visit Queen West art galleries, Can Stage’s Romeo and Juliet in High Park, The Textile Museum and 10,000 Villages. In addition to working directly with artists and arts organizations, participants completed leadership training and delivered their own free arts program for children at four local libraries. Their programs were a great success with over 90 children attending.

At the completion of the two-week program the youth presented a final exhibition and event in The Smith Zone gallery space at Lakeshore Arts, to which family and friends were invited. Youth designed and planned the content of the final exhibition and event in collaboration with their artist mentors, showcasing completed work and new skills learned.

Testimonials from ARTiculate participants:
“I liked everything because there was so much variety and the workshops were all so much fun.“
“Everything was basically awesome.”
“I liked how we were able to do community service. I think it was great working with kids and teaching them the things we learned.”

In 2011 ARTiculate will run from July 18th-29th and will feature all new workshops including pinhole photography, culinary arts, latin hip-hop, theatre and more. Registration forms are available at www.lakeshorearts.ca.
