Intergenerational Art Awakening Program
About:
AFCY’s Outreach Program includes intergenerational projects such as the Intergenerational Art Awakening project. The program operates in schools and community locations. It involves young people working with AFCY professional artists to make artworks, which are given to the elderly recipients of Meals on Wheels programs. Meals on Wheels is a social service agency, which delivers meals to isolated seniors in the GTA.
AFCY works with youth enrolled in the YMCA’s Kickstart Youth Program who create art for the Meals on Wheels program, and through partnerships with various Seniors' Centres the youth are brought face-to-face with residents at a senior centre to paint together on the same works of art.
As a culminating event, AFCY hosts a celebratory reception where the artwork made by the youth and seniors is exhibited. The reception acts as another way to bring the youth and seniors together in a constructive environment for meaningful interactions.
This program attempts to bridge the gap between seniors and marginalized youth and children. It also aims to generate a meaningful picture-based dialogue that can develop awareness within young people of the social issues affecting seniors, and can provide opportunities for these populations to cultivate feelings of mutual trust and respect.
