Painting Our Stories : Free workshops for creative young minds

by Ilana Divantman

About:

Parkdale-Roncesvalles Community Murals
Starting January 18th 2011, 4pm

Painting Our Stories is a community-based group in the Parkdale-Roncesvalles neighborhoods involved in developing public art through community participation and gathering past and present stories of their area. Each artist led project is developed on the basis of bringing to light issues within the community such as immigration, access to food and shelter, and history.

In conjunction with St. Christopher House and the Wabash Building Society, Painting Our Stories is holding free workshops for youth between the age of 13 and 17 interested in becoming part of a mural team. Workshops include storytelling, bookmaking, painting, and printing with local artists to produce two final murals, one for the Parkdale Youth Space located at Parkdale Activity Recreation Center on 1499 Queen Street West and an outdoor mural for the Soruaren Park Field House located on 50 Wabash Avenue.

The 12-week workshops will be held at the Parkdale Youth Space every Tuesday from 4-6:30pm. The first workshop begins Tuesday January 18th 2011 at 4pm. Friday workshops beginning January 21st at 5:30 are optional by weekly times for extra painting fun and learning more in depth about public art practices which will be held at the Soruaren Park Field House.
