Last year STEPS facilitated programming in Walter Saunders Park. As a result of the overwhelmingly positive feedback they received from local residents, they have expanded “Woven”. STEPS has been developing strategic partnerships and producing community engaged artwork in the area since early 2014, during which time they have engaged hundreds of community members of all ages and transformed two derelict public spaces into sites for permanent artwork that is now celebrated by the local community—one of which (the Dufferin York Beltline Underpass Mural: “SKEIN”) is within feet of Walter Saunders Park. Woven builds on the community engagement work done through both Animating Toronto Parks and the Dufferin Underpass Mural. It continues to work with the weaving/textile theme explored with local residents and ties in with physical form of the Beltline, which connects many diverse communities. “Woven” will be a series of park animations that celebrate Toronto’s rich textile history, along its York Beltline – an old rail line turned green space that connects a series of Toronto’s uptown communities.“Woven” will engage the surrounding communities of the Beltline through a multidisciplinary family friendly program series in Walter Saunders Park on June 24th, July 22nd, and Aug 26th from 1-4pm that include activities such as: yarn pompom making, a giant community weaving, live music, and wayfinding animations.
